Our partnership with DeepOcean is a great example of these values in action, evolving into a model of sustainable innovation and operational excellence.
In 2017, we embarked a substantial new chapter in our collaboration: upgrading and extending the lifespan of DeepOcean’s ROV fleet. Instead of buying new equipment, they decided to work with us on comprehensive refit projects.
If in Doubt, There Is No Doubt
– If in doubt, there is no doubt, says Arvid Horn, Technical Manager of ROV & MHS/VLS at DeepOcean, whenever Kystdesign and DeepOcean prepare for a new refit project.
This means that once the criteria for necessary changes are set, DeepOcean has complete faith in our ability to execute the projects without requiring further oversight.
– Over the past few years, DeepOcean has invested a significant amount in refit projects with us. Supporter 1 and Supporter 3 were the first ROVs to go through our refit process. We made major upgrades, like replacing hydraulic systems and adding new technology, which extended their lifespan by up to seven years, says Berge Thomas Velde, Production Manager at Kystdesign.

Cutting Costs and Boosting Sustainability
The refit projects have assisted DeepOcean in saving a significant amount of money, up to 80% in material costs, while also supporting sustainable practices through reuse and reducing waste.
This aligns with Kystdesign’s commitment to being environmentally responsible and helps DeepOcean stay competitive in the marine technology sector.
– We thoroughly test all functions through our IAT process, before returning the ROVs to DeepOcean. This ensures the equipment meets all specifications and quality standards. The detailed documentation we provide, including full-scale test results, is important for DeepOcean’s operations and customer satisfaction, Berge Thomas explains.

– Refit projects are incredibly educational, says Berge Thomas.
– We gain invaluable insights into the wear and tear on equipment over 10-20 years of use, which highlights areas for improvement. This knowledge is essential for our engineers and technicians in further development of our ROV systems and components.
Our first ROV, Installer 1, delivered in 2002, is still in full operation. DeepOcean plans to have Kystdesign perform a life extension refit in 2025. This demonstrates that Kystdesign’s technology from back then remains on par with today’s market demands.

Built on Trust
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a difficult time for the industry, DeepOcean’s support was invaluable. Their decision to award us contracts secured our workforce and maintained our technical expertise during tough times. This act of trust and support shows the strength and resilience of our partnership. By building on this strong foundation, we are ready to face future challenges and opportunities together.
DeepOcean’s plans to increase their service capacity will further strengthen their market position and allow us to keep providing reliable and cost-effective solutions.
– Refit projects hold a special place in our hearts, as we embrace the challenge of extending the lifespan of ROVs and ensuring they perform at their best. Sustainability is a great part of DeepOcean’s values, and by focusing on circular economy, we aim to minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency, says Arvid Horn.
